Cobalt Irradiation of Food

To prevent E-coli in hamburger and Salmonella in chickens, does anyone have any ideas about irradiating the meat and chicken after it has been sealed. The irradiation will penetrate the sealed goods and make the chicken sterile and the meat sterile. The seal will keep it that way.
