A while ago, in a tangential discussion on this Board, I noted my affinity for salty food, alluding particularly to a bacon, blue cheese and Marmite sandwich of my own creation. In response, a poster (whose name I forget) suggested I try the "Executive Salad" at Club Lago. Despite the fact that I work a block away, and have been to Lago numerous times, I have failed to act on that salad suggestion, until today.
As many of you know, Club Lago is an old-school red-sauce Italian bar and restaurant on the corner of Orleans and Superior. The outside of the building underwent a recent face lift, but the inside looks like a prop from an early 1960s movie--and I mean this in the best possible way. I suspect that some restaurants have paid design consultants absurd sums of money to achieve a similar look.
On to the food. First off, there's something cool about ordering an "Executive Salad" in 2003. It sounds like something that Darren Stevens' boss on "Bewitched" would have ordered in an effort to shed a few pounds for the missus. And it looks like something out of the 50s or 60s as well--iceberg lettuce, olives, anchovies, hunks of blue cheese, bacon, blue cheese dressing and a hard-boiled egg. Sounds good, huh? It is good!! Not something I'd eat every day, but for those occasions when I crave salt and cheese, it'll be my first choice.
Anyway, I'll be going to Lago more often, and trying the rest of the menu. So thanks to whoever recommended this in the first place--I'll act quicker next time!
