Clams for chowder

Good question following up from one on the San Francisco Board. When I was a kid we used to go down to the beach at Pismo and get the good size but undersized clams the licensed clammers had to throw back. Game warden always looked the other way. On the east coast I believe a similar clam would be a Quaohog???? (spelling????). Where in Los Angeles does one find those larger clams to chop up and put in a chowder?
