Chutney, the Indian restaurant on Jones that was closed for about a month because of a fire (as reported by cots), reopened Monday night. No one was hurt, I'm told, but there was lots of smoke damage.
I like the tandoori fish ($8.95). They use catfish, fatty enough to stand up to the heat of the tandoor. You get three or four good-sized chunks, cut crosswise through the bone, charred in places, red-orange with spice. Heat is fairly mild. Maybe you could order it hotter. The meat flakes right off the bone and is moist and rich. Great with plain naan. It comes with the usual lemon, cilantro and raw onion (be sure not to skip the onion, orange with spice-laden ghee). If social circumstances permit, pick up the bone afterward and just work it.
Now I've got to check out other tandoor fish dishes. Favorites, anyone?
