It had been my fondest wish that there would be chow worth reporting at the Swap-a-Rama at 41st and Ashland, Maxwell Street in a warehouse. I regret that it was standard norteno and grill fare, not even worth trying from the looks of it.
We wound up breakfasting down the street at a board favorite, Restaurante Oaxaca, 45th and Ashland. This was my first trip in over a year and, frankly, a bit of a letdown. Thought the service was a friendly as ever, but certain details were off (stale chips and pale, generic salsa; bland red sauce) and a couple of the Oaxacian specialties have been lined off the menu. If you haven't been in a while, try to give these folks some support, maybe it'll pick up. On the plus side, my son's breakfast included some superb fried chicken pieces and beans in a mildly seasoned gravy, an improvement over the canned mush served at most Mexican grills.
