Nine Chowhounds got together for a really good meal at Taqueria Habanero on upper 14th St., NW. We ordered:
Posole (special of the day)
And tacos of carnitas, barbacoa, al pastor, and fish (special)
Let me know if I forgot something.
The only dissapointment was the fish. I wouldn't bother with that again. Everything else showed very good flavor, though nothing makes me swoon. Posole was very fine, rich, and complex.
In general, I suggest going with the huarache here. It is a thick, flat, and crispy tortilla with strips of onion, cactuse leaves, and the topping of your choice.
The tacos are served room temperature with chopped onion. Lime and raw radish on the side. Three salsas are available along with onion marinated with jalapenos. I love the salsa verde here. Of the meats, barbacoa is by far my favorite. I make carnitas, so it's hard to impress me, and this didn't. But overall I found that this is a place that excels at providing deep, complicated flavors. The guacamole here is very good, but I am totally fine with just mashed avocado, lime, and salt, so I rarely need that at a restaurant.
