We have the occasional rumble of an on-the-road chow event. The trilogy of Ann ARbor, Dearborn and Detroit being a really good option.
If one were to go within 5 hours in southeast direction, there is Cincinnati, Indianapolis and stuff in between.
My dream chow location is practically straight south: near Carbondale there is a Danish Chef who once was on the team who prepared the meal for the film "Babette's Feast." He has permission from the producers to replicate this feast down to the wines, which was done informally by other restaurants when it first came out. He has been known to do this as a fundraiser for Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The last time I was apprised of his replicating the meal as a fundraiser, the cost was around $150 each. I'm still kicking myself for being temporarily cheap (these passions of financial prudency and "what the heck, let's go" battle on in my soul) and not going.
Though Southern Illinois may just be a food drought in some people's opinons, I think we could make a go of this. I met someone recently who promised to give a list of locations for (pig) snout sandwiches!!! Already it is looking a bit promising! :D
