Chocolate Pecan Pie by Black Jet Baking Company | Bernal Heights - San Francisco

On Thanksgiving Day I gave thanks for bakers like this who make extra pies for walk-ins like me who were too indecisive to pre-order. Black Jet had posted on IG that it had a few extra pies and would be open in the morning on T-Day. I felt lucky to score one of the chocolate pecan pies, still warm from baking. For COVID, the display cases are nestled against the windows for easy viewing and a counter has been set up in the doorway for transactions.

The scent of chocolate, roasted nuts and buttery pastry perfumed my car. My brother described it as the "chocolate chunk cookie of pecan pies", referring to the hunks of melted bittersweet chocolate that seemed to outweigh the custard. With that amount of chocolate this was the least sweet pecan pie either of us have ever tasted. The whole pecan halves were nicely toasted and crunchy. The crust looks thick, but it was actually many puffy layers and not at all heavy. The texture reminded me of a vodka crust, and over the next few days, the remains of this large and heavy pie reheated well. The one criticism I'd have of this pie is that I would have liked a bit more of the custard itself, as the nuts and chocolate dominated. Still, I would not hesitate to buy this again.
