Help! Former New Yorker arrived hoping to find a great reasonable, authentic restaurant preferably North of Chinatown in Manhattan. I cannot FORCE my friends to go downtown.... one In Brooklyn, one UES, one UWS so... please help out. - high school friends need a rendez-vous. I miss twice cooked pork, Sichuan crispy beef, Shanghai scallion pancake.. Please restore my confidence - that New York has not lost its Chinese heritage. All the posts bemoan there "local" so what gives? No Cantonese recs please as I live part of the year in LA.... and no Americanized Chinese - I was recommended and went to Phillipe last night and man what a shame... I miss the earthy taste of a hot pot.... I have spent decades in Asia but do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese... only some Vietnamese and Thai but need the real deal... In New York and no good Chinese?
