Chinese in Encino

Sandra W. | Mar 18, 2004 01:06 PM

I take my mom out for lunch once a week in Encino and have eaten in every deli/american/chinese restaurant we find. Chinese in the valley is very disappointing with the exception of Sam Woo on Sepulveda.

Mom hankers for old fashioned, "New York Chinese", hence A&W in Northridge is both a little too far and not really her cup of tea. I've driven past a place called New Jasmine several times, tucked into a mini-mall and almost impossible to see from the street. We once wanted to eat there but couldn't find it. Yesterday we finally made it.

The first thing you see when you walk in the door is an article from the Los Angeles Times touting the food and calling it "New York Chinese". Auspicious! I couldn't help but notice the Pu Pu platter on the menu (for those still looking).

We passed over the small offerings of lunch specials for the full menu. (Lunch is always a drawn out affair with mom as she reads the entire menu sloooooowly.) I had a cup of hot and sour soup that was decent. We decided to split a Subgum Fried Wonton (a chef special). Freakin' fantastic! A huge offering of white meat chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and vegetables in a brown/soy based sauce. Not too sweet, not too salty, lots of flavor (and no msg). Mom declared it the best Chinese food she's had in the valley. I would happily go back and try other things.

FYI, there is a keyboard/microphone set up at the front of the room and the menu says Comedy nights are Tues. & Wednesday, 6:30-8:30 (be forewarned if you don't like comedy with your Chinese food.)
