Background: my mom has been wanting to check out the deals at Chinese restaurants being advertised in the newspapers: $6/lb crabs, $9 lb/lobsters, $5 roasted squab, $6 peking duck, $14 winter melon soups, 99cent scallops, etc. So, every few Sundays, we shlep over to the SG Valley...we've been to NBC, Ocean Star, and Sam Woo.
Of the three, Ocean Star was by far the worse. The peking duck was incredibly oily, and the crab had no taste. The only worthy dish was the steamed shrimp appetizer, which were huge and brimming with baby eggs...but really, how difficult is it to steam shrimp? The accompanying soy sauce was meager (no scallions OR red peppers!) The service was appalling as well...we'll not be returning for a while.
NBC was decent, though not spectacular. Soup was a good deal, and the chicken heated up the next day nicely.
Sam Woo wins top prize. Our past two meals here have been superb. Last night, the crab with scallions, peppers and garlic was incredible. The meat was very fresh, tender. We cleaned the plate, licking our fingers. The roasted squab were perfectly done with the skin a shiny brown--crispy, not too oily, and not too fatty either. Again, we were smacking our lips from the wonderful flavor imparted on the squab bones. The chinese broccoli with dried fish was good too, not overwhelming as some dishes with dried fish can be. Finally, the beef brisket hot pot with bok choy came in a wonderfully tasty broth, though the beef was a bit chewy. 4 good dishes out of 4, plus it was less than $40 for 4 people.
These specials are only written in Chinese, so if you can't read it (like me), bring along a translator or ask the waiter for help. Also, some of the deals are only available Sun-Thurs.
