Last time I was in SF (in 2006), based upon Tripadvisor recs (I had not yet discovered CH) I ate at a Chinese place very near HONK, maybe even next door. It was extremely good and had no atmosphere. I can't recall the name.
I thought maybe I should try a new place this time, so I've been doing some searches on the boards based upon other recs I remember receiving - most notably, R&G (which I discovered most people on CH say uses MSG, too much hoisin, sugar, and other sauce), and Brandy Ho's (which I found the thread about how it has gone downhill as of April 2008). I am having dim sum on a separate occasion - so my focus for this meal is basic Cantonese, preferably without MSG.
I won't have time to venture out of SF, so I'm wondering what's left, as HONK seems too touristy. Is Yee's a good bet? Or should I just go back to the no-atmosphere place? I feel lost!
