Thank you to all who responded to my chinatown post! After a bit of wandering about, my friend and I decided to bring out our lists and compare to see where we should end up. Amazingly, we both had New Green Bo on there, (and I say amazingly, because she really isn't that used to the city yet), so we took it as a sign from the Food Gods and went.
And I discovered that everything you all said was exactly true - the dumplings were the best I've had, possibly ever. I got the pork & crabmeat ones, and I killed all 8 without incident. My friend got the veggie ones, which were okay, but I didn't like them as much as the meat. We also had vegetable chow fun (which was bland, but not awful), and chicken pan fried noodles (I've had better, plus they are impossible to eat with chopsticks!). I also noticed that the dumplings come from a seperate area of the restaurant than the other food items do, and I wonder if that has something to do with the quality.
I actually had a more fulfilling noodle experience at Ollie's in Times Square on saturday night - a really big bowl of shredding chicken with mushrooms, bok choy and glass noodles were the best thing my poor, upset stomach could have hoped for. I also had a half-decent roasted pork bun, not bad for a total of $7.25 plus tip for the lot. You could do worse in the chain restaurant grotto.
thanks again for the advice!
