China Yuan & Chinese bakery (Tampa)

I've been craving agood chinese place, but without all the pomp and prices of TC Choy's. I thought I had fond it about a year ago at China Yuan, on armenia just north of waters. Ducks and octopi hanging from hooks. The BBQ pork was excellent, but the scallion chicken was barely cooked with just a hint of sauce. the shrimp dish we had was awful. pecan-crusted shrimp served over lettuce and rice drowned in some sort of salad dressing. ugh.

it was cold the other day, and on a whim, I stopped there for soup, although I really wanted some from the now-defunct Pho Cuong. The beef soup with egg noodles and chinese broccoli was very, very good--- with glazed BBQ beef adding to the savory richness. dim sum all the time, to be ordered off the list. the shanghai egg rolls were good, if a little greasy, with plentiful cabbage and mushroom.

the problem i had before was the vague descriptions of dishes. this last time, I stayed away from elborate sounding entrees and went for the simple items.

I also saw a chinese bakery in the same plaza. very resonable prices and a nice variety, with nothing being too sweet. custard buns, curry pork buns very good. nice baklava-style items with less honey than usual. I will try both establishments again. There is also a Peruvian place in the sdame plaza that looks good. I want to try this "peruvian style lo mein."
