China Fun - Chinese Breakfast ...not bad

Lau | Jun 10, 2007 10:38 AM

So, I went to China Fun for breakfast today to see if it was even decent (I half expected it to be horrible) and to my surprise it wasn't bad especially for Manhattan...i'll probably be returning at some point since its close to my gf's apt. The restaurant itself is decent inside, service was fine and this is what we got:

- xian dou jiang (savory soy bean milk) - served pretty standard with cut up you tiao (crueller), hot oil, vinegar and some cilantro; definately not like eating in taiwan, but beggars can't be choosers and i was pretty happy with this
- shao bing (sesame bread) - this was good, i'm pretty sure that it was made in morning and then re-heated, but again it wasn't bad
- fan tuan (rice roll) - it was so so, it was stuffed with flossed prok and suan cai (pickled veg), wasn't anything great, but was a nice complement to the meal (tasted better once you soaked it in some dou jiang)
- you tiao - these were good b/c they had just been cooked (i love it when its fresh) although they came out a bit late in the meal
- cha shao bao (cha siu bao - roast pork bun) - got the steamed ones just b/c i love them, they were fresh, the bread was actually pretty decent, the filling was just okay

Overall, I was pretty happy with it, its kind of funny b/c there are two distinct crowds a) is the neighborhood people who are stopping by for the typical americanized dishes and the b) the chinese people like me who were specifically there for the breakfast dishes. Fyi, they only serve it on the weekends. Anyhow, I dont know if id go out of my way for it, but if you're in the neighborhood, you should stop by...also their congee looked pretty good although i was too full to try some
