I just posted on the Manhattan board, inquiring about the seeming demise of Monk, which a few years ago was one of my favorite restaurants, in terms of service (and everything else). Someone else posted that she had been there in November and had had decent food but horrible service, which means either (a) she and I have different standards; (b) she and I, for some unexplained reason, simply had a different experience; or (c) the restaurant really has fallen. My question is: when a restaurant starts to slip (in terms of food, service, etc.), is it followed by financial troubles? Or, do the financial troubles precede the fall in quality? Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
