Working temporarily in Wilmington near Long Beach, I did a search on Yelp, looking for possible places to eat, knowing I wouldn't find much.
I did come across a little place called 5000 Pies on Santa Fe just south of the 405.
It's a take out only place. Because each deep dish takes 50-60 minutes to bake, it's best to call in an hour before you go to pick up. I ordered the loaded medium. No info on the sizes, but the medium was 10 inches.
The pie is terrific. I would normally eat two of these pieces, but I liked it so much I had a third piece It has a sweet canned tomato topping covering the cheese and other ingredients. The crust reminded me of my own rendition of Chicago pizza. This pizza travels very well and reheats very well, unlike NY or Neapolitan types unless you use a pizza stone. There are no personal sizes for the Chicago.
It's been a long time since I have had authentic Chicago pizza, and I haven't been able to make it to Hollywood Pies, but this pizza really scratches the itch for me.
They also have a great selection of sweet pies and cookies, all of which were very good. I enjoyed a lemon pie, plus a chocolate chip cookie.
Another plus: The shop is run by members of Fountain of Life Covenant Church in West Long Beach, partly as a means to employ their unemployed people. But they certainly do pizza and sweet pies very well.
They are open in the AM for coffee and pastries and 11:30 to 5:00 for the pizzas, but they hope to be open for the dinner hour. They also have thin crust pizzas which do have personal sizes, plus Calzones.
