There's little Chowhoundish about warmed-before-serving pizza by the slice, but when they were fresh, I enjoyed an occasional lunch at Flippin' Pizza in Falls Church. After a couple of consecutive disappointing visits, I gave this newly opened place on Lee Highway (strip on the opposite end of the strip next to Sloppy Mama's) a try for lunch yesterday. With a $6 lunch special of 2 slices and a bottled drink, I knew pretty much what to expect, but the menu was a surprise.
In addition to the "traditional" pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and such, and the new wave pineapple & ham, BBQ, cheeseburger, and chicken, there was the "Signature" or "Twist" menu, and this is where the Indian toppings are listed. A few have the common red or white sauce, but there are pies with itkka, tandoori, curry, and pesto sauce with combinations you'd find on the menu at an Indian restaurant. You can get an aloo chaat pizza, paneer with either tandoori or tikka masala sauce, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, and the mysterious lamb kabob pizza with kabob secret sauce, cheese onions, pineapple, jalapeno, ginger, garlic and cliantro. There's also a choice of veggie or chicken pizza-on-naan.
Unfortunately, all those exotic combinations are available only as a full pie. The only by-the-slice choice was cheese or pepperoni, so I had one of each. The crust was pretty decent for being warmed over, medium thickness (a bit thicker than NY street pizza, not even close to Chicago deep dish) and made for a perfectly satisfying lunch. I asked if there was potential for adding a rotating special pizza to the slice menu, and the friendly counter host said that was a good idea and would give it some thought.
Take-out, of course, but they have several tables and booths for dining in.
