Continuing to explore my new neighborhood I ended up at chestnut a few nights ago with friends to celebrate my birthday and it was a great experience.

It was a very quiet night on Smith due to the debates and a baseball game, so we were one of very few tables filled on a tuesday night.

Really enjoyed the housemade pickles and homemade bread. Had an heirloom tomato and bread salad to start with which was gorgeous. Wistfully I ate it thinking it's probably the last heirloom tomatoes I'll get to have of the season. Really a superb salad.

I ended up with the cavatelli disk as I couldn't resist the combination of butternut squash, goat cheese, roasted shallots, spinach and corn. Wow. It's pretty hard to get blown away by a pasta dish but this was truly excellent. One of my friends had the ravioli with hot soppressata which wasn't quite as exciting as my dish, but very nice. Large pillows of ravioli. And my other friend had the duck breast which I did not try but was told was excellent.

Very friendly staff, unhurried service (probably since it was such a slow night though...), just all around an extremely pleasant experience.
