I've been lurking on these boards forever. Yesterday, I was with a fellow foodie and she was craving some really good soul food. I said, if cars ever get search engines I'd be on chowhound ALL DAY! She handed me her cell phone and said, "Go for it!"
Well, the cell phone connection was slow. But while we were waiting, we swung by a favorite old haunt, Berzet's Luncheonette. The last time I visited was on a Monday and the gates were closed so I thought that yet another fave was lost. Berzet's was OPEN and the owner, cook and oftentimes waitress greeted us with a smile and a "Haven't seen you girls in LONG time!" This place is definitely more about the food then the ambiance.
I had meaty, tender, short ribs, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potatoes with sweet tea...the last two are VERY SWEET! My niece had baked chicken, seasoned all the way to the bone, collard greens, baked macaroni and cheese and half n half (half tea, half lemonade). She kept saying, "I forgot how good this place is!" The bill for both meals, including homemade cornbread was less then $25.00!
She also serves a great 2,2,2 breakfast. I think it was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of sausage (the thin, savory link sausages) or bacon for $2.22 or something like that.
