The recent Sa Rit Gol thread got me thinking how much I love chawan mushi and how long it's been since I had it, and then I thought the same about natto and consumed three containers from Mitsuwa. My question, of course, is: who has great chawan mushi and natto, and also how many variations are there on these basic dishes? Here in LA, I have found natto only at one restaurant, AOI on First Street. I had it there one time about a year ago and since have never found them open. Chawan mushi I haven't had since NY, although I think I saw some one get it once at Sushi Gen. Are these dishes more generally available but not advertised? Or are they simply not to be had?
