Charleston Trip Report - Nothing new, mostly delicious

concordcourtney | Apr 16, 201912:20 PM

Chowhounds probably won't read anything here they don't know, but I haven't seen a lot recently about some of these spots so I thought I'd just write up a quick report of our weekend visit for the High Water Music Fest. We are two from Charlotte who make the trip down at least once a year.

The music fest itself was fine. I think most of the food vendors were local shops but we didn't eat much there. I wish there were more local beer options.

The Ordinary - We go here Every. Single. Visit. This time just for snacks and pre dinner drinks. The Wahoo crudo was awesome. Strawberry and fish, who knew! Rum drinks as always, delicious.

Chez Nous - dinner at the bar: This was our first visit here. Chez Nous strikes me as one of those surprise toys kids love these days. You're not sure what you're gonna get - it could be awesome, or it could be a little disappointing, so I was a bit nervous. Luckily our menu was on the positive end. Nothing was challenging or exciting (our entrees were steak and scallops) but everything tasted very good. I found the service to be pretty stilted and over-rehearsed, but overall an enjoyable dinner.

La Patisserie - Quick morning pastry and coffee. Very expensive but fine.

Xiao Bao Biscuit - Return trip, Lunch. Will never not return. I love this place. We would've gone back on Sunday if they'd been open. I had the Som Tum with chicken this time. I know the gas station vibe is part of the deal, but I do wish the inside felt just a little cleaner.

Edmunds Oast - Return trip, late dinner at the bar. Awesome. The highlight of the meal was the steamed greens side. I would love to have the recipe for that. I didn't love dessert (a chocolate hazelnut cake with marshmallow) but maybe I'd just overdone it by that point in the day.

The Grocery - First time, brunch. I dunno, fine I guess? I wouldn't go back for brunch. My food was just okay. The breakfast plate was the same I could've gotten at any breakfast place. My partner says his hollandaise was only okay. Also, what is it about servers STILL needing to explain what farm to table is, and why the chef is driven to craft a seasonal menu. Don't tell me, show me. :)

McCrady's Tavern - Dinner. We'd been to the Restaurant before, but this was our first meal at the Tavern. It was great! Again, nothing really out of the ordinary (except my partner had chicken friend duck confit!), but it was well executed and professionally served. I had a bucatini that was a great finish to a meat heavy weekend.

Glazed Gourmet Donuts - on the way out because I like donuts. These were good, huge, and it seems like they rotate enough to make me want to go back and see what's there next time.
