Chapli Kabab @ Zam Zam Restaurant & Supermarket in Fremont

Melanie Wong | Jan 5, 201411:44 AM

After stopping at Krishna ( ) in Fremont last month, the signage on this delivery truck in the same parking lot pointed me to Zam Zam Supermarket.

Inside I found not just a grocery store, but also a restaurant serving regional food stretching from the Middle East to Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. I took a seat at a table nestled next to the Turkish sweets display.

I ordered the chapli plate, featuring the famous beef kabab of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Much beefier in flavor with less assertive spicing than Da Afghanan’s, and with less ground cumin and starch, also not as crusty on the outside. Though cooked to well-done, this was quite juicy, I suspect because it wasn’t smashed on the flat top to build up the crust.

Served with beautiful long-grained basmati pallau, a side salad, Afghan bread, and an incendiary yellow-green hued chatni, this was more than I could eat in a sitting.

The lady who waited on me was concerned that I didn’t like my food. She didn’t speak much English but with hand motions demonstrated that her other kabob customers clean their plates. Though I asked for a box to take my food home and tried my best to explain that her food was fine, she came out with another offering for me. She had just taken a tray of small meat pies out of the oven and gave me one to try. About 2” across, the small turnover’s filling was simply ground beef and onion. But the fresh crispness and an accent of the same chatni made the little pie special.

Even more special was the warmth of service I received at this small food stand.
