Chapel Hill: Don Jose Tienda

Don Jose Tienda, at the corner of Franklin Street and Rosemary in Chapel Hill (Carrborro?) is getting its act together. They're now serving a wide array of homemade Mexican pastries (which I tend not to care for, though they are very pretty) and more importantly they are making their own tortillas in an enormous machine at the back. The places sells good tacos, but the tortillas can be purchased seperately for something like a buck fifty per pound. These are far better than any prepackaged tortillas. I recently bought forty, and they were handed over to me while still warm! I made tacos at home, and then fried the remainder of the tortillas, producing very toothsome tortilla chips. What's more, the folks who run the tienda are extemely friendly.

Best,
David A.
