Catalina Offshore Products

Catalina Offshore Products is San Diego's best source for the freshest local fish. It's an unusual place- there are no glass cases, no retail shop- it's just like the restaurants buy fish. Their head guy, Tommy Gomes, is a legend in the local fishing industry, and does most of the specials via cryptic messages on his Facebook. Todays special is a great one:

"YELLOWTAIL FILLETS SKIN OFF, READY TO COOK ON THE GRILL $4.95 a pound, ya got ta mention FB and its only good today."

They have specials almost every day, and every time I've been there the product has exceeded my expectations.

The way it works: You call in advance (619) 704-3639 and ask for Tommy and tell him you saw the special, and how much you want. He's a little gruff on the outside- don't worry. You then come in later to their office and pay for it- credit cards have a $25 minimum or pay cash. They hand you a bag with your fish already wrapped and ready to go.

Just trust them.

You can't really "shop" at Catalina, and I've been there without calling in advance and it didn't work well.

Then get on Gomes' FB so you can get the specials (almost) everyday.
