Trying to find a casual place for my husband to meet an old friend that he hasn't seen in 30 years who only has a small window of time from 12:30-2 on a Monday near to 49th st and broadway for lunch. Something casual, clean, inexpensive ($20 and under for lunch), quiet enough and comfortable enough to have a conversation. All cuisines are okay, except Japanese.
We are in Queens, and don't get to the city too often so are very out of touch with what is good anymore and especially in times square area.
Tried searching through the many posts for times square and hells kitchen, and I don't really think they want to go all the way to 9th ave--saw the Virgils place, but it seems to get mediocre reviews, but the sandwiches appear to fall into the budget. Cuban place Margon is more of a counter joint place and too chaotic. Not interested in any buffet-steam table places, either. Just a casual, and clean sit down place with good food.
Was thinking Becco but have never been and have always heard good to poor reviews, but they have a $17.95 lunch special..also heard it's very noisy to carry on a conversation.
What about Dervish, on 47th between 6th and 7th ave--they have a $17.95 2 course lunch special--looks like a pretty place--but see mixed reviews on the food...we are used to very good Turkish food, so this might piss him off if it sucks.---
I see there's Scarlatto, nice lunch menu $14.95 250 W. 47th St. --location perfect--looks like a very pretty place--but I see lots of mixed reviews on the food, and zagat gave it a 23???
Would appreciate some insight and some current up to date info on the area--thought there would be more recession lunch specials going on??? Maybe not, though.
