Thanks for your recommendation for this gem of a restaurant in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark. It's a five minute walk from Newark rail station, so very easily accessible.
Myself and the brother had dinner there last night, and it was wonderful.
Soup arrives unbidden. What a lovely idea, particularly when it's a rich brothy chick-pea soup, with sausage and vegetables. An Iberian version of a classic Italian vegetable soup. Full marks.
We both had fish - me fillets of Whiting, done in Basque style, with a creamy butter sauce. My brother had the red snapper, done 'Bilbaina' style (from Bilbao), grilled with a tomato crust.
Both were perfectly cooked, and would not have been out of place in a good restaurant in the Basque country (which is saying a lot). Both were served with mixed vegetables which owe more to hearty local appetites to any intrinsic appeal. Which is fine - this restaurant has a finely tuned sense of its customers and their desires.
Great to see food this good being served without the hype of the fancier joints in Manhattan, or even New Jersey.
