Went to CSS in Del Mar again last night. Have been there four times now and it's always almost completely empty. The place right next door, Urban Plates, is literally 30 feet away and always has lines out the door every time I have gone to or by CSS. I don't know how they are going to survive in that high overhead location. It makes me sad because I was so excited about the new location and I really want it to be and do better. I want to LOVE this place, but so far I just haven't.
Perhaps the lack of customers is understandable as the food just doesn't quite seem to measure up to what I have gotten at the North Pork location. Last night I had the burger. While the meat was tasty, it was impossible to eat as a burger and didn't eat well with a knife and fork either. The bottom of the bun was completely soaked sogginess that had compressed to a paper-thin layer of mush. The two tomato slices were rock hard and not ripe, creating a wedge on top that the bun just wanted to slide off of. Fries were pretty good and the wife ordered the pork belly wrap which was also very tasty and just what she was looking for. I don't really like the ambience there either. It's kind of cold and hard, plus the music is just to loud.
I hope they stay, but they need to get their mojo going big time or they will find themselves soon on that "closed" thread.
