Last month I joined a friend for the first Carmel-by-the-Sea Culinary Week at Yeast of Eden. When sifting through the menus offered for this restaurant week, I look for discounts if the dishes are part of the regular menu offering or for dishes created for the event. Yeast of Eden was one of the minority that provided a reason to be locked into the $40 prix fixe menu.

Opting for the set menu and the $15 beer pairing, I was impressed by the quality of the cooking and the generous pours. The food was far more detailed than I expected from a "gastropub". My one quibble would be that the set menu did not offer any choices and the first course and second course were both spicy hot. Still the Szechuan Cauliflower was done well and a fun bar bite. The Red Curry Duck was even better though a different rice side would have been appreciated more instead of repeating the same jasmine rice with aromatics. The Churros served with spicy chocolate sauce were pretty good, and while not as hot as the previous two courses, again in the caliente category.

My friend had the "passport" that earned us a complimentary order of the Rosemary and Sage Frites ($6 value). These were terrific fries, accented with crispy herbs and served with a zesty malt vinegar aioli. She opted for the Korean Fried Chicken entree, $28, that was nicely done if overdrenched in gochujang. It was quite spicy too with a boatload of homemade kimchi garnishing the plate.

Service was very good all round. We had the attention of the house cicerone to walk us through the various beers. The pairings were all interesting and carefully selected. She offered two additional tastes as well when she recognized our interest.

We were both happy to have tried Yeast of Eden. If not for restaurant week, it would probably have been awhile before I found myself here.
