Got taken to lunch today at Thali - Regional Cuisine of Indian, in New Canaan.
I had the $7.95 buffet (Monday thru Friday lunch only) and was very pleasantly suprised. Everything was very fresh, and this is most certainly NOT food that has been dumbed down for American palates.
The buffet is about five hot items, plus soup, a variety of cold salads, and rice. If you have the buffet they also bring a quarter of Tandori chicken to the table, along with bread.
I was particularly impressed with chicken rezela, which had a very pronounced but multi-layered heat to it. Lamb rogan josh (you can also order it with goat a la carte) was both firm and fall-apart soft, and very tasty. I also liked chana bhindi (chickpeas and okra in sauce). Also included in the buffet was a dessert of vermincelli kheer, made by roasting vermicelli in ghee and then boiling it in milk, delicious!
While not at all authentic an interesting item on the regular a la carte menu was "nanwiches", naan rolled around a filling lrogan jush was one and there were about four or five others).
Service was very attentive and extremely pleasant.
The restaurant is incredibly beautiful with all kinds of interesting architectural features (check out the sari fabric wall hangings) including a plexiglass waterfall.
