Cambria/Paso Robles report

AC | Dec 17, 2005 03:49 PM

just got back from a mid week trip to cambria and paso robles with my girlfriend and wanted to throw in my .02 on a few places we visited.

Cambria

Linn's Cafe: Good food, polite service. We had omelettes with cut fruit on the side and ollialaberry muffins. Very tasty and fresh and we will be back.

Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill: The food was awful and very over priced. The view is nice but you can get the same view by walking along the beach. Even my coffee was bad. I had the philly steak sandwich for $13.50. Terrible sandwich, not very much filling. French fries were good. Girlfriend had the ranch salad with chicken. Another overpriced dish that I could have put together with ingredients from a 7-11 and it probably would have been better. I cannot stress enough that this is a restaurant to avoid. Just terrible.

Paso Robles

Bistro Laurent: Good service, cute place, very friendly staff. Wine list was marked up very high. I thought I would find some of the local wines for a reasonable price but that was not the case. Food gets a C-. Just not impressed at all. Frenh onion soup was underwhelming. I had a tarte with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes and my gf had a tarte with salmon and creme fraiche. Both were bland and not up to snuff. She had the free range chicken and I had the lamb. My lamb was the best of everything, but sides were bland and her chicken was just OK. If they are going to charge the prices they do, the food had better be good. We didn't bother having desert. The only break I will give them is that there was a large party of 14 in their outer room and perhaps the kitchen was distracted. However, we were the first diners of the night at 5:30 and they should have been able to get the food out to us first. I am giving them the beneft of the doubt because of the big party, but I think this place is living on past repuation. If they are considered one of the top places in Paso, then I might move down there and open a restaurant, because it just wasn't that good.

on the way back to LA, we stopped at Superrica in SB, which was great as always.

We loved Paso Robles and Cambria and will be back there soon, but we won't be going back to laurent or moonstone ever. Probably will try Paris next time we are there.
