On my way to a morning appointment on Saturday April 13, I passed by what looked like a street fair in progress at Garfield Elementary School (1640 22nd Ave @ Foothill). There were vendor tents along the sidewalk and lots of cars pulling into park. I hurried back once I was free.

The event had two parts. Inside monks were leading chanting and hundreds of celebrants were taking part in what seemed to be a huge potluck with amazing looking food bring passed around. The first photo is the green chicken curry bowl I put together for myself along with some salad-y slaw of herbs and fresh greens. Table after table of plates of food were available to enjoy. I asked if there was a place for me to make a monetary donation and no one had an answer for me.

Outside was a food sale. I bought grilled wings and beef skewers to take home with me.

The curious thing is, when I tried to find out exactly what event I had stumbled upon, I could find no internet trail. There had been other Khmer/Cambodian events for the New Year in Oakland on March 23, April 6, and later on April 27. But no sign of the celebration I found. Anyone have any information about this? I'd love to attend next year when I can spend more time. This is less than two blocks away from Cambodian Street Food's window, maybe I can ask them.
