Last month I tried Camalig Filipino Cuisine on the north side of Salinas. It's a typical turo-turo set-up with steam table service offering nearly a dozen selections. What is atypical is that the food on display was not shiny with grease. The lady helping me was a bit gruff when I asked her to identify the dishes available since they're not labeled. I noticed that the man was more friendly, offering sample tastes, and also served up larger portions. But there's no reason to complain, as my two-way combo rice plate for $7.25 was more than enough to serve two people.
I opted for the kari-kari and the sinigang as my two options. The kari-kari was a bit watered down in the saucing but loaded with cuts of chewy beef and honeycomb tripe. I thought the sinigang was better. Medium-tart and light soup base combined with pork ribs, daikon, water spinach, eggplant and cherry tomatoes. For dessert, a turon, that was crackly and freshly fried.
The pancit and lumpia were not ready yet during my lunch break here. I'll go back to try them and more selections some time.
