We had a 7:30 reservation for their first night after the review in the SF Chron. The room is lovely and conversation is possible! The servers, although sweet, were very amatuerish. "You guys" was a frequent expression; the wine was poured across each diner, she knew little about the wine, but was adequate on the menu. The service can use work!!!! They wre slammed last night and the kitchen was definitely under the gun- totally understandable, but there was never an attempt to apologize or explain.
On the other hand, the food was yummy. There were four of us. There was a musee bouchee of duck prosciutto and fresh peas. The frist courses were a crab salad, fois gras, heirloom tomato salad- all excellent. Our main courses were a vegetarian choice[one of two] of grits cake with sauteed mushrooms- ok, halibut perfrectly sauteed, and wild salmon great. My entree was the braised pork shoulder with spaetzel- great. We ordered just one dessert- chocolate biscuit-like cake with mint ice cream. They felt the need to color the ice cream green and it was way too minty. The dessert was a disappointment. We did not leave the restaurant until 10:30- long wait for the food in the overstressed kitchen.
We would definitely go back for a special occasion and my hope is that they train their front staff better and take fewer reservations so they can handle the demand better.
