Always game to support new local restaurants, my wife and I rolled down the hill around 9:30 tonight to check out the new Bernal outpost of Chez Maman. As we approached the restaurant, we saw 4 people - 2 women and 2 men - having a heated exchange outside the front door. Turns out it was two patrons who had been gracelessly refused a table, had eaten at Moki's, then o ntheir way back had let the proprietor know of their displeasure. Since we were not privy to any of the facts of the dispute, we could only judge on style - two customers rather earnestly trying to explain to a restaurant host or owner why they had been disappointed while that gentleman blew smoke in their face both literally and figuratively. The women brought their case directly to us, imploring us not to go in, and the proprietor seemed to rely on some reverse psychology, saying to us, "Fine - dont eat here id you dont want."
Bemused, but not tempted, we drove to Incanto, where we were seated although the kitchen had closed 10 minutes earlier. We had, as always, a fantastic meal - with wonderful service to boot.
