BYOC: Bring Your Own Cheese from Appleton Farms to pair with beer at Hopsters Alley
Yes, my Yelpie friend Sasha and I were able to buy some lovely cheeses and crackers at Appleton Farms' stand in BPM and then take them over to the nearby Hopsters Alley store in BPM and enjoy them with a tasting of 4 different beers on tap ($10 + a free tasting glass). The friendly folks at Appleton even advised on pairings and we had a great chat about local music with the staff at Hopsters.
CHEESES (Appleton sells their own cheeses, plus a wide variety of cheeses from members of The Massachusetts Cheese Guild):
1) Cricket Creek Farm's (Williamstown, MA) Berkshire Bloom, a Brie-style semi-soft bloomy rind cheese
2) Cricket Creek Farm's Maggie's Round, a Alpine toma-style raw milk cheese
BEERS (periodically changes):
1) Hopsters Upper Class Creme Ale
2) Hopsters Comet Citra American IPA (5.5%) -- My fav
3) Hopsters Newton Corner Porter (6.9%)
4) Hopsters Comet Mosaic American IPA (6.2%)
Appleton kindly provided a wooden cheese knife and Hopsters a few paper towels.
Background on Appleton: "History runs deep at Appleton Farms. Founded in 1636 by Samuel Appleton, this thousand-acre farm in the towns of Ipswich and Hamilton, Massachusetts, introduced the Jersey cow breed to North America and is the oldest continuously operating farm in the United States. In 1998, Joan Appleton donated it to The Trustees of Reservations, which still celebrate the farm's dairy legacy by bottling and producing yogurt and cheese from its rich Jersey milk and operating a dairy store on the farm. In addition to featuring Appleton Farms products at the Boston Public Market, The Trustees are proud to be partnering with The Massachusetts Cheese Guild and its 20+ farms and cheesemakers to showcase the amazing range and quality of Massachusetts cheeses."
Hopsters Alley is a great source of local beers, ciders and liquors (and if you want to try local wines, check out the Massachusetts Farm Winery and Growers stand in BPM).
Also, if you buy something at BPM you can get your parking upstairs validated for $3 for 3 hours (but reverts to full price if you stay longer than 3 hours).
