Bushi Tei report

Hi - Phoenix Hound here visiting and thought I should be a good citizen and report out.

I was pleased to see that Bushi Tei was open - last time I stayed at the Radisson Miyako the restaurant was due to open the following week. So I popped in last night, one-top with no reservations and got a nice little table. Love the big communal seating area though, too.

I agree with some of the previous posts ... the menu may be a tad expensive, and the wine list was not terribly impressive (they were out of several), but I enjoyed the Cab I did find and thought the dishes well thought out.

The Omakase sounded good ($80), but I wasn't in that mood so I chose to just have a more simple meal. Three of the four tables around me, though, had Omakase and it looked terrific and they raved. I coveted the pate du maison heavily, as did I see grilled sea trout.

Here's what I had.
Amuse bouche was "tuna compote" in a little pastry shell ... it was a little too much like Starkist to me to be great, but still was good with just a hint of mint. The pastry shell that held it was also used later for the pettit fours, I noticed.

Two different breads were brought out - one cracker and one herb baguette. Both very good, nice butter.

First course was Quail Config with Serrano jamon wrap, served sizzling hot in its own little cast iron pan. Sauteed mushrooms, some micro greens and a thick and dreamy balsamic reduction. Great dish, wonderful presentation both visually and aromatically.

Main course was seared and roasted Napa duck breast, I chose medium rare. It was on the rarer side, but still tender. Came on a bed of sauteed spinach and served with mascarpone mustard and dried chutney. A very nice dish, though I could have cooked it a bit longer.

Ordered a 2002 Mario Perreli-Minetti Napa Cabernet Sauvignon - terrific wine at a decent ($39?) price. Was a little big for the duck, but spot on with the balsamico.

Desert was a double esperesso and chocolate cake with roast strawberries to go so I could munch back at the hotel. The berries were very good - i'll be doing that this weekend with some of those $2 buckets of strawberries I saw at Trader Joe's last week.

All in all, I was very impressed and will definitely be back. You all have a winner there!

Now it's off to try A16! Will report back tomorrow.
