burrito cravings...

After 12 years in SF (mostly in the Mission), I was ready to move on...and now my boyfriend and I are living in Bologna for the next year while he goes to grad school. Bologna's a beautiful town, very medieval, with beautiful arched porticos over the sidewalks and all kinds of churches and palazzi dating from the 13th century and beyond. And the food, of course, is gorgeous--all the salumi you could want, ravishing deep-yellow handmade pasta, fresh porcini mushrooms, and more. But you know, old habits die hard. We were quite smug at "not missing the US" and not having cravings for peanut butter or other typical american things. Until I was in the supermarket and saw piada...thin, slightly flaky big flatbreads, looking exactly like hand-made flour tortillas. Before I knew it, I'd bought tomatoes, rice, black beans, white onions...everything but sour cream (they don't really have it here) and cilantro (this is strictly sage-basil-rosemary country). And believe it or not, we had some pretty good burritos for dinner that night. Not exactly CanCun, but it helped...
