Burgers in San Diego

DoctorChow | Oct 25, 201807:44 PM     11

Burgers are like martinis. There are the real ones, and then there are drinks made with gin, maybe some vermouth, and other stuff, served straight up in a martini glass.

SD Eater ran the “20 Essential Burgers” today (https://sandiego.eater.com/maps/san-d...), and what a joke. Of those twenty, the only real ones, IMO, are those at Jaynes, Friendly, and Starlight. The others, especially the gargantuan Gapping Mouthburger at Hoodad's, are BS. These are just piles of miscellaneous "stuff" with a bun on top and bottom and a slice of cooked ground beef somewhere. The differences include imaginative variations in the pile, I'll hasten to add, but these aren't real burgers. No human being can possibly jam a Gapping Mouthburger (well, that's what it looks like) into their actual mouth. These monstrosities might better be called meat salads and served in a nice arrangement on a plate.

I’m still a fan of the simple but well done burger at Luce. Ordered rare shows off the meat, which is excellent. I pass on putting any of the aioli sauce (or, gawd forbid, flavor-dominating and flavor-spoiling ketchup) on this delicious, simple, “real” hamburger.
