The Marie Calendar's near my home is one of the original ones from the 1960s. I still remember the simple menu back then and how they baked the pies up front. It was always jam packed.
Over the years a ton of competition opened and the menu went more Denny's. It's not as busy as it used to be but I gave it a try recently.
I ordered the classic burger. It had the same taste it did when retaurant was new. First of all there's the meat which is ground on the premises so it doesn't have that strong supermarket burger taste. Instead the patty is juicy and crumbley. The bread is softer than most buns and the combination of pickles, American cheese and the dressing makes it the tastiest and most comforting a burger around.
The french fries were OK, back in the 60s they didn't serve fries.
I challenge anyone to give this burger a try and name one that can top it. Am I nuts here or do others know of this best kept secret? I don't remember other Marie's being this good so maybe it's just the orginal stores.
