Help Building a Little Liquor Closet?

Niki | Jul 26, 2005 10:28 AM

The fact that I hardly ever drink leads to my complete cluelessness about choosing the best tasting bargains for my latest little chowhound plan: a little liquor closet. I want to find out the best tasting/cheapest rum, brandy, a dry white and a full bodied red wine (neither wine should be at all rough in flavor), and say, a sweet wine such as a port or sherry. Probably 75% of the time these will be used for cooking. I know what the chefs say about not cooking with a wine you wouldn't drink, and that makes sense. But I'm not looking for any specialty brands or vintages. Rather, I'm looking for standard brands that I can easily find in low-price outlets.
Speaking of low-price outlets - where is the lowest priced retail wine/liqour to be found in SF?
Thanks!
