Budget Minded Food Adventure

As a new new yorker i find myself in need of some celebratory foodertainment for my upcoming birthday but find myself decidedly short on cash. I would love to go big and splurge for a tasting menu at EMP or Degustation or somewhere fancy and pricy, but i just cant justify the expense in these lean times.

Im looking for suggestions for destination worthy food that wont break the bank, not neccessarily a meal to replace the fancy ones above, but maybe a walking tour or roaming forage of an area. I'm not picky about the type of food or time of day (if places werent open late, that would be okay) but things that are available sunday are a big plus. Availability of non-shelfish things is important, though some is fine.

price could be up to 50 per person, drinking not necessarily required. I've done most of the LES food tour before in various visits before, but something similar to that would be a good option.

What would you do with a day to explore a nyc cuisine or area, and around 50 bucks to spend doing it?
