My friends threw a fabulous baby shower this weekend catered by Tartine. Everything was a smash. We had a few things I hadn't tried before.
We had both a ham and cheese quiche and a vegetarian one. I tried the vegetarian one, which was fluffier, and didn't like it as much as the ham. Also I've always eaten this room temperature at Tartine and prefer it that way to warmed up.
Pain au chocolate is a little like a chocolate bar sandwich. The bittersweet chocolate is unevenly spread though, so much less exciting if you get the wrong piece. Ham and cheese croissants were sliced into nifty spirals by our hostess, which made them much more appetizing. I'm not a huge fan of croissants, and these seemed overdone to me, but no one else complained : )
On top of this we had three desserts: the nectarine raspberry custard tart, which was utterly perfect; a creamy layered blueberry thing that was pretty heavenly, even as it sagged under its own weight; and a dense chocolate layer cake that I couldn't handle after so much butter.
(And as I type this, I'm wondering why I wasn't smart enough to take home the leftovers when offered...)
A sampling of Korbel champagnes finished the table. We weren't thrilled with the rouge (a sort of sparkling shiraz), and I prefered their cheaper sec to the blanc de noir. If this kid doesn't turn out to be a chowbaby, we'll be very surprised.
