Brunch at Bright Food Shop

Six of us went there for brunch today at 1 p.m. and surprisingly had no problem getting a table. In fact, the place was practically empty, something I've never before seen on a Sunday.

I had a hard time choosing what to eat since the menu all looks fantastic. In the end, I settled on the vegan rancheros (like huevos, only with smoked tofu)- big chunks of smoked tofu piled on top of black beans and corn tortillas, topped with vegan cheese and vegan sour cream. I skipped the topping (didn't like the non cheese), but the rest was fabulous! Slightly spicy, very smokey - a nice meal, filling but not heavy.

I also ordered a side of fruit, but that was a bit of a ripoff - about a 1/4 cup of bananas and overripe apricot pieces.

My friends had the salmon fusion maki (a spinach tortilla filled with eggs and smoked salmon, then wrapped in nori); the eggs and bacon plate (thick cut bacon got the nod of approval); the posole; the breakfast burrito (a normal size, not like someone's forearm); and the regular huevos rancheros.

The cornbread - a soft, orangey bread flecked with hot peppers - got a major thumbs-up.

For six people, drinks included (not everyone ordered drinks), it came to just over $75. I'll definitely come back, though I doubt we'll be able to get a table that quickly ever again.
