The best breakfast in the midwest for straightforward food that has some pizzazz is at Mickie's Dairy Bar, which does have a bar and does have milk but mostly has breakfast and lunch 6 days a week from 6AM to 2:45 with the most wonderful fried potatoes - and can be doctored with onions, peppers - green or Thai - and cheese if you want - and omelets full of any other mixture. Pancakes which fall off the plate even if you ask for smaller ones - and is a place for all aspects of Madison to interact - students, workers, professionals, sports fans, government folks and professor types. The bar is full of folks reading papers and drinking coffee and trading stories with the waits who have been there for decades and weekends are full of families and many generations. This is not a place for the fainthearted or bagel crowd. Lunches have the best soup you can imagine and all of the food is delivered by Payow, the chef/owner, through a small counter and a bell - and checks are still hand written and pay as you leave. A port in the storm of life.
