bread baking question: is the powdered milk essential?

I have a kid who is severely allergic to dairy, and I wondered if I could omit the powdered milk from the sponge for these sweet potato rolls. I am obviously going to use non dairy margarine in the place of the butter.

any thoughts? Should I just find another recipe wtihout it? It just looks SO promising though!
