I was all fired up after the long Chinatown discussion a week ago, so I made a date with my father to meet in Chinatown for lunch yesterday. We chose Bow Hon (850 Grant) based on an inspiring old "Walk don't run post" about the fish salad.
I am sad to say, there were no fish on the premises, hence no fish salad at noon yesterday. Instead, we had a perfectly mediocre meal: duck soup with mustard (milky broth, gristly leftover pieces of duck -- rather unappealing the more you looked at it, though it was not bad to eat); salt and pepper squid (tasty, oily, pretty good); clay pot of oysters with roasted pig (plenty of big, primal bivalves, a single morsel of pig, chewy mushrooms, lots of gelatinous brown sauce.)
Not terrible, not good.
I'm not discouraged about the possibility of eating well in Chinatown--there must be something & I'll be back next week. But I probably won't return to Bow Hon, even should there be fish salad.
