Our blind tasting of various Kentucky and Tennessee whiskies continued recently with Round Two. The results of Round One are posted on a separate thread at this link:
As with Round One, all whiskeys were tasted blind "side-by-side". The results were as follows:
1st Place: WL Weller Special Reserve 7 Yr Old. "Very nicely balanced, mild aromas, subtle caramels"
2nd Place: Wild Turkey Rare Breed. "Delicious if a bit overwhelming. Sweet floral notes, strong, very pleasant, very bold"
3rd Place: Woodford Reserve. "Nice but with a serious burn. Medium uncomplicated caramel notes. Warmth can overwhelm & detract a bit"
THE ABOVE 3 WHISKIES ARE ALL NOTED AS BEING OUTSTANDING IN THIS TASTING
4th Place: Wild Turkey 101. "Indistinct. Just not that interesting. Soft side of bold. Uncomplicated but pleasant."
5th Place: Old Charter 12 Year Old. "Very easy to sip. No harsh burn. Medium bold complexity. Less flavor development than you might like"
THE ABOVE 2 WHISKIES ARE NOTED AS "FAIR" or "ABOUT AVERAGE"
THE WHISKIES BELOW WERE JUST NOT INTERESTING.
6th Place: Bulleit Bourbon. "Indistinct dry flavors. Medium-mellow. So-So, nothing bad or good."
7th Place: Makers Mark. "Sweetish edge. A slight 'funky' taste edge. Tastes like a bbq grill smells. Strange Flavor notes" This was a huge surprise because Makers Mark was the WINNER of Round One and tied for 2nd in Round Three (which see). It's very possible this was a contaminated bottle or glass.
W.L. Weller 7 year old and Wild Turkey Rare Breed are repeat "top performers" from Round One.
