Boule and tea (kinda long)

Although the buzz on Chowhound made Boule top of my list to visit, the recent LAT article about tea pushed it up to must visit ASAP status. Sunday I made the trek...

The store was not crowded, but I could tell that if there were a rush, service would likely be chaotic. I loved the all looked lovely.

We had a macaron (hazlenuty), a coconut macaroon, a Le Tigre pastry and a tea-flavored madeline. The macaron was amazing - there was an amazing amount of texture variation for such a small confection - quite a trick. The le tigre (a crispy chocolate chip cake layer wrapped around a chocolate center) was also divine and not too sweet for my tastes. Obviously made with high quality chocolote. The macaroon was good and had a great firm feel, but I have regularly had better (in Pittsburgh of all places)...but for a small treat, it was quite nice. The madeline was a letdown, not for the madeline-ness, which was moist and a great complement to a beverage, but for the lack of any real hint of tea...

which leads me to the major letdown: the hyped Mariage Freres tea. OK, first off, tea bags in a paper cup do not bode well - usually too much water leading to weak tea (and that, of course, ignores the aesthetic element of a paper cup). We had a Marco Polo - listed as the most famous blend - and a jasmine green tea. While both cups were passable, they were not worth $4 or so and they did nothing to recommend this place as a tea destination. The tea flavors were neither particularly distinctive nor strong. The Marco Polo was like any other decent black tea blend and the jasmine tea didn't have any real notable jasmine aroma. Oh well...

Maybe I will give Boule's tea another chance if they do open up a seating area where I can try a proper pot, but for now, I will rush to this place to try more sweets, but bring them home to savor with tea.
