Boulder becomes nation's second city to vote in a soda tax

"... The passage of 2H means a 2-cents-per-fluid-ounce excise tax on distributors of beverages with at least 5 grams of added sugar per 12 ounces. The tax approved in Berkeley, plus the three Bay Area taxes on Tuesday's ballot, were all half as harsh, with just a penny-per-ounce levy.

Exempt from the tax would be alcoholic and medical beverages, milk products and 100-percent juice drinks.

Tuesday's election is of enormous national importance for both the beverage (and specifically soda) industry and the public health world.

Such taxes have been defeated more than 40 times on ballots across the country, so the clean, four-win sweep this year may wind up being a tipping point for soda companies that have, until now, been used to winning these tax fights..."
